I have known Masha and Andrey for a long time, over six years now! It was quite an honor to photograph the new member of their family: Ivan. Their two weeks old son is an adorable boy who was always looking at the camera, and allowed me to capture his endearing gaze. He was cooperating and looking straight into the lens, which made me think that he might have as well being enjoying the session! As my own two boys, Ivan was born at home, under the care and supervision of midwives. During her pregnancy, I shared my story with Masha about my experience, and she decided for this alternative to hospital delivery. She was very pleased with her choice, and I was glad that everything worked out very well. I find that it is always very exciting to see the dynamics of new parents, and in this occasion, to observe the happy moments that they shared with their little one throughout the session. It is rather enjoyable to observe the details of the interaction of families that become somewhat indescribable by words, however, by being enclosed in a portrait, we can be able to express something that only our souls can respond to. As for the props, they were partly inspired by Alice in Wonderland; I was reading an edited version of Lewis Carroll’s book to my son, and while strolling around the streets of Toronto, I found these items, which grabbed my attention (since they were directly related to my recent lecture material). It was great to see how well they matched with the hats, and how perfectly Ivan fit in the cup! This photo session took place in Andrey’s sister’s home, and we found that the gallery wall was perfect for a portrait that contains the essence of the moment.
